My Web Portfolio June. 17. 13.
My Definition: Febuary. 15. 13.
First off, you might not know what a blog is. So I put the dictionary explanation right at the top for every time you open it. Its basically just a place to splurrr my ideas and thoughts of day to day things. I'm gonna talk about why I made a website, and it is for my Future Forum Program I'm taking in placement of English, Civics and Careers. You learn all the necessary things, just more technology based, and one of the tasks at hand is to create our own website. At first I was skeptical, I have tons of other crap to do in my life, another thing to maintain? But then I started making this and it seems like it'll be fun and not as time consuming as I originally thought. And now here we are.
Blog:
[blawg, blog] noun, verb, blogged, blog.ging 1. a Web site containing the writer's own experiences, observations, opinions, etc. 2. To maintain or add new blog entries. |
TEDTalk: Coding a Better Government. March.18.13.
Today we watched this TEDTalk in class by Jennifer Pahlka who took a bunch of tech designers and put them to work on apps. They did, and created many useful apps like one that lets you adopt a fire hydrant to shovel out in the winter, and she focuses on how this went viral in a matter of days, and evolved into people using it in different countries for different functions, like tsunami sirens that needs to be checked up on. She focuses on this because of how people run to the internet for collective action and civic apps to solve their problems, instead of going to the government because they're like a 'secret agency'. But the government doesn't do nothing, they helped connect you and that app or person helping you, so they're not completely useless.
She also talks about how the government should be like the internet, open and public, available and able to make changes, and I agree. Personally I'm a big hater of the government, I think they're corrupt and secretive and selfish, only wanting power, never inducing change. But if I were to be able to contribute my thoughts to them and have the ability to change and help things, I would be all for it. I also think the world WOULD be like this, and is not because of selfish corrupt disrespectful minds... Sound familiar? |
10 Things YOU Should Do Before and While Job Hunting: June. 18. 13.
1. You need to think about what kind of job YOU want, something that's the same as your other work? Something new? A job that is work heavy or requires critical thinking? And how many hours would you like to work in a week, how many can you sustain along with school? What about friends and family? Do you want this job for a long period time, or can you work for a certain amount? What kind of salary do you expect? What can you live on? Making these clear before searching for a job can help limit to specific ones that fit your criteria, and removes the ones that won't work for your lifestyle right away.
2. Write your resume suited to the job being applied for, and relate your skills and experiences to ones you will use in the job. Revise and edit, proofread, rewrite, get someone to read it, revise some more.
-Some think it's necessary to write a cover letter, and this can be the difference between getting an interview and getting a simple gaze over your resume. You want to include an introduction to yourself with your objectives, relate your skills to specific examples you had to utilize them, and conclude with a thank you.
3. Research the business your applying for:
-Find out what the business does, and who else it's involved with. If you don't know what the business is for, you will seem very clueless in an interview. If you also know of the things it's doing, and what is happening to it, the employer may be impressed. The more you know, the more confidence you'll have.
-Learn a bit about the job, and the responsibilities that come with it, this will help you have a deeper understanding of what to expect, and what kinds of things to ask.
-Ask others in the similar job field, how do they like it? What is most difficult about the job? Easiest?
4. After researching the company, write down some questions you have with it. Also ask things related to the job, like the tasks involved if you don't know, expectations, salary, hours, and responsibilities. Make sure to have questions! You can seem very uninterested and vague about the job, not putting any thought into what will be necessary for it. Plus clarification is always good, be sure to ask questions if thought of during an interview, or while dropping off a resume. Being confused will only mess YOU up.
5. Look around your community and online, there are lots of helpful programs to aid on your journey for a job. Things that range from resume templates, cover letter tips, interview questions, employment boards, employment websites, workshops, classes, skill building programs, even some nice volunteering looks good on a resume. All in all, there's room for improvement, why not improve?
6. Make sure you have an online portfolio that presents and shows you well!
-Most employers will go online and search for you, because everything can be found on the internet, and that will show your personality and your likes/dislikes right away. Make them good and true!
-Lots of students are screwed over from jobs because of a questionable picture/ status, don't be like that! If you need to, go through websites you're actively on.
7. After you've handed in your resume, don't be afraid to make a follow up call! This will put you fresh in an employer's memory, and keep you there for when a position does open up. It will also show that you're putting in effort to get the job, and will show you've taken that initiative.
8. Review your interview answers! If you've ever been to an interview before, they ask you specific questions about you and your skills. Think over and even write down some of your responses, and correct them to sound fluent and like a summary, try not to ramble. If you haven't been in one, look up some frequently asked questions and jot down some things you could say, and decide which is best.
9. Act professional! So many people have lost jobs due to silliness, rants, or trying to buddy up with the employer. Use your best vocabulary, clothes, and experiences to prove you're the one for the job.
10. Keep trying! Job searching is a difficult and time consuming task, but then again so is a job. If you don't get the job you first applied for, do a follow up in a few weeks and try another business. The job market can be strenuous, so don't give up!

Hmmm... Very Saddening News :( March. 20. 13.
This morning searching around on twitter I came across a CBC News post about spring. Being very excited for the warmer weather, I decided to check out the linked article. Spring day and a day of spring are coming at 2 way different times. Spring Day is Wednesday at 7:02 am, and that's when officially winter is over and can leave But, it's not. There are actually no signs of spring actually being here or coming all across the nation, and they say that we all will have an equally miserable weather. This is a lot different from last year, where we reached outstanding temperatures in March, this years just being a little more normal, so its not anything outstanding its still snowing. This is because of the Alaska and Siberia's air stream, whereas last years it came from the Southern US. Good ol' Canadian winters, eh? Just grab a Timmies hot chocolate! That will help me last ;D

Earth Club :) April. 19. 13.
As you probably know about me, I try to be eco-friendly with everything. So when I heard about the earth club at my school, and a chance to contribute ideas to people that care and want to help put them in action, I couldn't resist.
On our very first meeting we were already tossing around a lot of ideas and things we can start doing around our community. I had so many things to say and suggest, and so did many others. In the end, we came up with a little list of things to start, like cleaning up our river behind our school, planting trees/ a garden, putting up bird seed, placing recycling bins beside every trash can, encouraging recycling by hosting events/fundraisers, and many others. You can do these things on your own at home, and help out too. Every little bit, and every persons contribution, helps.
There's only been one meeting so far, but another comes tomorrow, and I'm as excited as ever to start saving the planet.
Some things I do at home to help out is: recycle almost everything. My mom thinks this is super easy, and I therefore the only thing she does, but it still helps! In your life about 75% of the things thrown out are in fact recyclable, and that's horrible if were not reusing those materials when we can! I find it amazing we can turn old plastic and glass and paper back into more, we should do it at every chance! If you don't have a recycling bin, you can contact your city workers and they'll supply you with one.
I am also planning on starting a compost at my home, to break down old, half eaten food into rich, nice soil. I haven't actually done this before, or know how, but I will look it up very soon and post it here so you can start one too (Y) my Grandma once had one, and used it all the time.
Either this month (April) or next, I'm going to start a garden for fruits, vegetables, and some flowers because I find them gorgeous :) the only problem with this is there's tons of neighborhood cats around, and I don't want them to eat my plants ): That's also something I'll look up and post here for you readers. Also for my conundrum.
I will also put up bird feeders around my garden, to encourage a peaceful mood.

Rafiki Beads For Saviors!
No, rafiki beads are not given to people saving other people, I just didn't know what other title to give this, but I definitely wanted to talk about it.
The other day, my boyfriend came to me with this thing he bought for me that his school was selling. It was blue, circular, and very big when not looped around itself. They're called Rafiki Beads.
I thought it was surprising, because my boyfriends not the kind of guy to randomly do this. It was even 10 dollars! But then he told me it's not just the beads he thought I'd like, but the fact that the 10 dollars spend on it goes towards supplying someone with water for a full year in a 3rd world country, personally made by a mother in Kenya. When he told me this, it put the biggest smile on my face, because he wouldn't have bought it if not for me, and knew I'd love it.
It also warms my heart, knowing that he helped a sadly unfortunate person live for an entire year with water. Its fantastic, and I wish I could tell everyone to buy one too. 10 dollars seems so little to us, but makes a huge difference to someone else. If everyone could do this, who knows the difference we'd make.
I'm told that a lot of things like this happen at his school, and that they have tons of projects to help a lot of problems around the world, and I smile at that too, knowing that someone has cared enough to try and make a difference, and most definitely is.
Every time I look at my wrist, or sometimes I'll wear it as a necklace, or a headband, I am reminded that I saved someones life, and that really is a good feeling.
If you want to help the cause, check out this website that sells Rafiki beads online for water in 3rd world countries. It explains all their goals, how their achieving them, and how you can be involved. Check it out :)

WHAT CITIZENS SHOULD KNOW ABOUT: People on the bus -______- June. 20.13.
My Speech: Why Everyone Should Own and Use a Rain Barrel. May. 29. 13
So, I have something to get off my mind. Something I want to give you all insight to is the benefits of a rain barrel, because personally I believe everyone should own one. They can help you reduce your water and energy bill by being able to use this water for things like watering the garden, cleaning ceramic surfaces, like cars and windows, and can actually be better because there's no lime or calcium. They can also prevent flooding and pollution from fertilizer run offs. Saving money? Reduce pollution? My question is, why not?
Did you know America, and Canada are in the top 10 of wasting water? Over 400 billion gallons of freshwater is being with drawled every day! If we can reduce that, then why not? They're also really easy to use. They have a dispensing nossle on the side, and also a hose entry. You simply set 'em up and wait for your free water! Do you like to save money? Well, most places can charge between $100-200 dollars for a good rain barrel. But because we are selling them from our school for earth club, we have the ability to sell them at a mere $50! And all proceeds go towards a new water bottle refill station at our school, because all we have are dirty, old, mould infested fountains that shoot out tiny streams of water that taste like it's been sitting in our school for centuries. So what I have to say is, why not? All good things can be retrieved out of owning one, for you personally, and your world. I am trying to get this message to society, one person at a time. I hope you get a lot of valuable information and ideas from this, and are inspired to come out to GCI on May 31. 2013 between 3 and 8 to get yours! Or you can order online at www.rainbarrel.ca/gci (write on board) and pick it up. Thank you all, and please consider. |
My Collage
Recently I was assigned a task of creating a collage reflecting my need and wants of my future, the things I'll do, my job, what excited me, and the people I'd like to meet, or that are my 'role models'. She gave us a list of questions, and I went and googled appropriate pictures suited to me. I put things like happiness, science, travel, good food, gardens, solar panels, donating to charities, those sort of things. That part, I thought, was easy. I've sat around and day dreamed of what I want my future to be like, so I knew what I was doing. Then I had to think of people I look up to, kind-of like mentors, and I blanked. There's nobody around that I take opinions from and reflect them through my actions. Nobody... Alive, that is. So I started thinking of monumental people in the PAST and thought of lots! The five I came up with are Albert Einstein(theoretical physicist), Bill Murray(actor/ghost buster), Jesus Christ (Savior/mythical?), Robert Munch(author/poet) and Steve Jobs (creator of apple) as a teenager, when he was full of ideas and energy.
Why Albert? Because he's Einstein! Why wouldn't I want to meet somebody that sparked physics; something widely known now and further expanded and added onto. It would be an honor to meet him.
Why Bill? I love to laugh, and he hits my funny bone. Watching his movies makes me hysterical, I can't imagine what he'd be like in person. It'd be a lot of fun, and an honor as well.
Why Jesus? Being an Atheist, I have a lot of questions. Not even to his reality or anything, but about his actions and choices throughout his life that I read through the bible. I'd shake his hand, and thank him for his suffering.
Why Robert? I've read all of his books, and loved them all. There all full of meaning and moral and rhymes and wonderful pictures. I once met him at my public school as a kid, and would like to meet him again.
Why Steve? I watched an article on his creating the computers as a teen, and thought it would be really cool to have met him in this time and maybe even contributed my ideas. I would shake his hand, and thank him for the technology.
So those are my reasons. Who would you see as your mentor? Whether known or not, dead or alive, comment and share your thoughts!

Formal Essay on Formal Essays? June.3.13.
Formal essays are an essential part of learning in English, as well as other subjects like Science, Civics, and Geography. This is because a formal essay can clearly layout your opinion in a neat and organized way, it's easy to use and to follow the format, and can be used for any topic.. like formal essays!
When you look at an essay, you see the first paragraph stating the writers opinion and the reasons for it. This helps the reader have some insight on what the essay will be about, and to give a little persuasion at the beginning. The essay then flows into the explanation of the writers reasons which make the reader more informed of the topic presented, and then wraps up the whole thing with a nice sentence restating their opinion, and the reasons for it. Just as a reminder, and to make it sound academic, rather than an abrupt ending. In elementary, middle, and high school you're given the same format for an essay over and over again, and it's pretty simple to use. You just plug your own topic and reasons in, put it in individual paragraphs, correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, and BAM! You have an essay :) -Topic sentence (topic + position) -Reasons (burger part of a hamburger) -Concluding sentence (topic + reasons) The final reasons formal essays are a great way to display information that you've learned, persuade someone of your topic, or prove you know something. It can be used for recipes, assignments, letters, e-mails, and plenty more! Therefore, they can be used for pretty much anything you want to write about. (except stories.. That might not work well) So, if you're in a rut, and don't know how to write your argument/explanation/story to a moral, a formal essay is a fantastic way to display any kind of information you'd like in a good-looking way. |
Romeo&Juliet Dramatic Reading: Friar Laurence by Me. June. . 13.
Analysis:
Friar Laurence is explaining to Juliet a solution for her not to marry Paris, and that is to drink a fake poison, as he calls it is an unfamiliar trick to the body and that it's native, and death will be simulated in all aspects; unconsciousness, no pulse, no breath, cold temperature, and no colour to her face. He mentions that the roses in her lips and cheeks will fade to paly ashes; meaning a pale grey will be left. He also relates the slow unconsciousness to death when he takes people's lives, and that their eye lids, which are referred to as windows, close afterwards. He then says how each part of the body will shut down, like being deprivation of sustaining government. So it will be her saving grace by convincing her parents she is dead for two and forty hours, and she can be with Romeo, or so they thought... |

My Thoughts: Romeo&Juliet Stratford Play May. 22. 13.
The play in Stratford really helped me have a better understanding of the relationships that went on between everyone. Seeing them, and their coordinating outfits and voices was very handy, and easy to follow. Also the way they acted, and even looked at each other with the emotion of how they're suppose to feel towards them originally from Shakespeare. And the emotion was greatly displayed! They exaggerated the right things and flowed smoothly from scene to scene. And the language easily decipherable, it was always known of the theme of each scene. The actors/actresses demonstrated it all very well, with a wonderful, intricate stage for their use.

My Perfect World: March. 19. 13.
In my perfect world, everything is peaceful and perfect.
Original earth, no society, nothing's been wrecked. Leafy green home, animal invaded lands, Left alone to roam, search, discover. There are no bans. All seasons, all different times, we find enjoyment in all. Connected together, supporting one another, no one can fall. A place to forever be, with no sadness or worry. You are free, exploring all that you can see. Rain, snow, wind, sun, it's good for us. Watering and nurturing without people giving a fuss. If anything, helping the process finish with success, so that in our world, we can finally have the best. To think of things to do is key, because no one tells you what to do. Run, travel, learn, play with me. Converse, build, change views. Your able to feel and think whatever you'd like, let it wander. Find the things around you, create, imagine, ponder. No government or religion to rule you, you're your own God. No guidelines, your best judgement is the one they applaud. Living with the ones who raised you, and the ones you raise. Or to wander alone, wild, dazed, stuck in a craze. And in this perfect world, all our problems are gone. No pollution, nothing to put chemicals on our lawn. No production, we don't want more stuff, please! More flashing lights? Colourful objects? Dings and beeps, I'm gonna seize! No rape, murder, lying or thieves, Just helpless critters, honest people, gathering from rich trees. In here, all is equal and fair. Going along life without having a care, worried about clothes, make-up and your hair. That's not right, don't judge, find someone rare. No want of military's and power, love conquers that. There's forever peace and happiness with no fear of nuclear combat. Personally, my world is great, and is always here. Its' got a cover, society, and people that live in fear. Well come join me, there plenty of space and welcome! This is a place to finally be who your meant to become. |
