Road of Trials: Comparison of Mario and Ender's Game. December. 03.12
Ender and Mario both go through a very long road of trials, where they learn different skills and gain supports to help them on their way to their final battle. Ender had to at first learn to use the simulators, and soon developed well thought-out strategies for the different approaches the opposing team based on experiences. Mario demonstrated this, as well, by working with Luigi to jump higher, Yoshi to run and defend himself better, and to search only specific tiles that could give him power-ups instead of the simple coin. Mario also learns how to earn lives, by sometimes appearing in tiles, but mainly from reaching 100 coins. They both had a good support system to help on their road of trials, all helping Mario and Ender draw back on their previous experiences, to learn how to handle the present one. This includes people and professors for Ender, being his commanding team in the battles and eventually helping study the buggers to develop better strategies, but also isolating him and making him go outside his comfort zone to find a solution to his issue. For Mario, this included people, but in the form of his plumbing brother, Luigi, that helped develop skills to journey through the various worlds, and also bosses that forced him to use those skills to get stronger and advance onto the next levels.
Religion- Learn Something New Everyday! Oct. 31. 13.
This year I decided to learn more about the multiculturalism at my school, because we sure are known for it! And how I did this is by taking a World Religions class where we study topics on Islam, Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, Judaism, and Hinduism. I've always found religious concepts and beliefs so interesting and fascinating so I am really enjoying this class! One of my assignments was to write a page on the Muslim coverings, the different types, and their reasons for them. What I found was a lot more in depth then I originally thought, which was that it was said by Allah to have the beauty of women hidden only for really close relatives. Well, that's only half of it. Check out this document :)

Meeting of the Witches... Again?!?! Oct. 30. 13.
I know I haven't posted in a while, I've been super busy with school and work and volunteering I haven't had the time! But with my English class this year I am required to update my site more often. So here I am! :)
I was asked to write a blog about Macbeth, specifically the scene where he goes and actively searched for the witches. Now, I haven't read this part yet, so my prediction might be waaay off.
I predict Macbeth is going to ask about his decisions, killing the king, framing the guards, killing them too, and now attempting to murder Banquo and Fleance and only succeeding with one, and ask if he did the 'right' thing for his future, or if he messed up the whole prophecy all together. I think he's also going to ask about the escaped Fleance, and if he is a threat to his king-ness. Maybe the witches will tell him he's doomed, and he will frantically try to cover his tracks, making him more paranoid. Or maybe they'll tell him that he's done everything as They for saw, and for him to continue what he's doing. Honestly, I have no idea what will happen, but it'll be suspenseful!
To those who have read Shakespeare, and not particularly liked it, I was in the same boat UNTIL I started reading Macbeth. It's a lot different then his other stories, in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat, needing to know what's gonna happen next. If you haven't read Shakespeare, this is one of my favourites and I recommend it!

Formal Essay on Formal Essays? June. 3.13
Formal essays are an essential part of learning in English, as well as other subjects like Science, Civics, and Geography. This is because a formal essay can clearly layout your opinion in a neat and organized way, it's easy to use and to follow the format, and can be used for any topic.. like formal essays!
When you look at an essay, you see the first paragraph stating the writers opinion and the reasons for it. This helps the reader have some insight on what the essay will be about, and to give a little persuasion at the beginning. The essay then flows into the explanation of the writers reasons which make the reader more informed of the topic presented, and then wraps up the whole thing with a nice sentence restating their opinion, and the reasons for it. Just as a reminder, and to make it sound academic, rather than an abrupt ending. In elementary, middle, and high school you're given the same format for an essay over and over again, and it's pretty simple to use. You just plug your own topic and reasons in, put it in individual paragraphs, correct spelling, grammar and punctuation, and BAM! You have an essay :) -Topic sentence (topic + position) -Reasons (burger part of a hamburger) -Concluding sentence (topic + reasons) The final reasons formal essays are a great way to display information that you've learned, persuade someone of your topic, or prove you know something. It can be used for recipes, assignments, letters, e-mails, and plenty more! Therefore, they can be used for pretty much anything you want to write about. (except stories.. That might not work well) So, if you're in a rut, and don't know how to write your argument/explanation/story to a moral, a formal essay is a fantastic way to display any kind of information you'd like in a good-looking way. |

My Speech: Why Everyone Should Have a Rain Barrel: May. 29. 13.
So, I have something to get off my mind. Something I want to give you all insight to is the benefits of a rain barrel, because personally I believe everyone should own one. They can help you reduce your water and energy bill by being able to use this water for things like watering the garden, cleaning ceramic surfaces, like cars and windows, and can actually be better because there's no lime or calcium. They can also prevent flooding and pollution from fertilizer run offs. Saving money? Reduce pollution? My question is, why not?
Did you know America, and Canada are in the top 10 of wasting water? Over 400 billion gallons of freshwater is being with drawled every day! If we can reduce that, then why not? They're also really easy to use. They have a dispensing nossle on the side, and also a hose entry. You simply set 'em up and wait for your free water!
Do you like to save money? Well, most places can charge between $100-200 dollars for a good rain barrel. But because we are selling them from our school for earth club, we have the ability to sell them at a mere $50! And all proceeds go towards a new water bottle refill station at our school, because all we have are dirty, old, mould infested fountains that shoot out tiny streams of water that taste like it's been sitting in our school for centuries.
So what I have to say is, why not? All good things can be retrieved out of owning one, for you personally, and your world. I am trying to get this message to society, one person at a time. I hope you get a lot of valuable information and ideas from this, and are inspired to come out to GCI on May 31. 2013 between 3 and 8 to get yours! Or you can order online at www.rainbarrel.ca/gci (write on board) and pick it up.
Thank you all, and please consider.
My Thoughts: Stratford Romeo&Juliet Play May. 22. 2013.
The play in Stratford really helped me have a better understanding of the relationships that went on between everyone. Seeing them, and their coordinating outfits and voices was very handy, and easy to follow. Also the way they acted, and even looked at each other with the emotion of how they're suppose to feel towards them originally from Shakespeare. And the emotion was greatly displayed! They exaggerated the right things and flowed smoothly from scene to scene. And the language easily decipherable, it was always known of the theme of each scene. The actors/actresses demonstrated it all very well, with a wonderful, intricate stage for their use.
Romeo and Juliet, Does their story apply to us Today? May. 21. 2013.
I personally found a few things about the play that teens should take into consideration next time their in 'love'. He exaggerates at the beginning when Romeo supposedly loved Rosaline, and then merely saw Juliet before he loved her. He mentions that they only speak barely 100 words between each other, and the Priest said things about love being in his eyes, because he moved so quick from Rosaline. Maybe teens shouldn't judge so quickly of looks, and think it's love.
There's also the exaggeration of the parents controlling Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare may not have wrote it for that fact, because it wasn't unusual for parents back in the day to have that kind of control. But we can relate it to us now, because of how influenced some teenagers are by their parents to do the things they want. It may not be marriage these days, but things like school and grades and a job. The controlling drove Romeo to his grave, and Juliet beside him so that they can finally be with each other in peace. Teenagers in 2013 would, instead, leave to live in peace.
I saw the exaggeration of conflicts, too. This goes between friends, and the whole town! They originally fought over biting their thumbs at each other, then having a huge brawl between everyone that had to be ended by the prince who threatened to kill the ones that started it if it happened again. Tough.. eh? There's also the (no) support from Romeos friends over his depression, and no help to be with his love. They also let him be alone when banished.
Those are my links to their days and ours, are there others? Ones Shakespeare intended, and some not?

Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. ISU May. 1. 2013.
I started reading this book on Monday when it was given to me, and it's been pretty intriguing. At first it was confusing, the author was talking of him trying to write this book for years, and how he had a lot of trouble. Also the procedures he went through to obtain stories and information. He often changed time frames, which was hard to stay on top of.
Once the actual story started of a guy named Billy (who is the author) who has emotional and mental problems in the WW2 after a flight crash where he hurt his head. He then has random moments where he's sent back into time, and ends up creating this universe of the Tralfamadorian's that can perceive everyone's life as a time line that has always existed, and can travel wherever they'd like. This book is set in the world war, where he was captured as a POW with a friend of his at the age of 18. He struggles a lot as an untrained soldier dealing with a lot of emotional problems. It does get gruesome at points, and has been banned in a few places. I will go start my book talk now, which I am interested to see what others have to say about this book. I told my friend about it and he started reading it, haha. It's a pretty good book, and I hope for the story to pick up with more drastic actions. |
A simile followed by a metaphor in the book that I liked:
" They moved like water, downhill all the time, and they flowed at last to a main highway on a valley's floor. Through the valley flowed a Mississippi of humiliated Americans."

My Experience in Civic Mirror- Practice Run April. 21. 13.
My FFP classmates and I partook in a practice run in Civic Mirror. For those that don't know what civic mirror is, it's a simulated online community (www.civicmirror.com) that everyone takes a role in, that aren't always fairly distributed, but that also forces people to interact to get the necessary supplies for survival. This includes things like security and health care to prevent disease and robberies, and your hidden agenda that needs to be completed by the end of each 'year' and kept secret. I thought it was pretty cool, and in a full game, everything counts simulation where all the games features are included instead of the short 3 days we used it will be a lot more interacting and fun.
I learned that since I don't have any close friends in my class, I can't team up and share what was given to me or what others have. Therefore, I had to buy and trade what I owned to obtain what I needed. Also, that there are people with the mind-set of wanting to run the country, so I should keep my eye out for them. I learned to try and get all the units of things you need before they are all consumed or bought alwell, because you could end up competing for some energy to power your house with another two people needing it just as much as you.
This short experience has made me think about social and government issues like having all the things to keep your family alive (7 people plus me) in a place where so is everyone else, and all the limited resources and places that were available for all of us was hard and not fairly distributed. This made me think about government, and how we didn't really have one for that short time and how chaotic people were and unorganized things were being handled in a way that not everyone got what they needed, and that happens in the world in so many places. If only there was a fair person that would make everything equal for everyone. Maybe, I could be that person...
In civic mirror, the possibilities are endless and you can do anything you want without it impacting your actual life. It gives you some insight on how the future will be like, with all the things to maintain, and the possibilities of who you can be and what you can end up with. Its sometimes not in your hands... But it's preventable.
This is a good program if you keep up on it, and really get involved. I can't wait (:

The Nap Taker by Shel Silverstein- Apr.17.13
No - I did not take a nap - The nap - took - me
off the bed and out the window, far beyond the sea, to a land where sleepy heads, read only comic books and lock their naps in iron safes so that they can't get took. And soon as I came to that land, I also came to grief. The people pointed at me, shouting, "Where's the nap, you thief?" They took me to the courthouse. The judge put on his cap. He said, "My child, you are on trial for taking someone's nap. "Yes, all you selfish children, you think just of yourselves and don't care if the nap you take belongs to someone else. It happens that the nap you took without a thought or care belongs to Bonnie Bowlingbrook, who's sittin' cryin' there. "She hasn't slept in quite some time - just see her eyelids flap. She's tired drowsy - cranky too, 'cause guess who took her nap?" The jury cried, "You're guilty, yes, you're guilty as can be. But just return the nap you took, And we might set you free." "I did not take that nap," I cried, "I give my solemn vow, and if I took it by mistake, I do not have it now." "Oh fiddle-fudge," cried out the judge, your record looks quite sour. Last night I see you stole a kiss, Last week you took a shower, "You beat your eggs, you've whipped your cream, at work you punched the clock, You've even killed an hour or two, we've heard you darn your socks. We know you shot a basketball, you've stolen second base, and we can see you're guilty from the sleep that's on your face. "Go lie down on your blanket now and cry your guilty tears. I sentence you to one long nap for ninety million years. And when the other children see this nap that never ends, no child will ever dare to take somebody's nap again." |
Mother to Son by Langston Hughes.
Well, son, I’ll tell you:
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. It’s had tacks in it, And splinters, And boards torn up, And places with no carpet on the floor— Bare. But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reachin’ landin’s, And turnin’ corners, And sometimes goin’ in the dark Where there ain’t been no light. So boy, don’t you turn back. Don’t you set down on the steps ’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard. Don’t you fall now— For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. |
I am/You are: April. 11. 13.
I am your reason to get up
You are my final sleeping thought I am your sun, so warm and bright, You are my undiscovered, dreamy night. I am the smile upon your face, You are my support in this life-long race I am the warmth deep inside your chest, You are the one that brings out the best. I am the one you can always call home, You are the one that encourages me to roam. I am your guard, the worry you need. You are my safety, my knight on his steed. I am the conditioner to perfect your shampoo, You are the love my heart has imbue. -Leah Hoffman |
Romeo & Juliet: Act 1 Scene 1- April. 15. 13.
Today we started Romeo and Juliet in English. I'm a pretty poetic person, so Shakespeare moves me with his creative words all the time, even though I find his books rather boring..
We (our class) first read the script, and briefly went through it to help understand what they were talking about/what was going down. Then we watched act 1 scene 1 in a modern-day film from 1996, and it was kind-of weird. The dialogue was from the book, but it was a tension between two gangs, and instead of swords they had guns, but were still talking about their swords..? It was kind-of confusing, and then a riot somehow broke out, and then they were in court, I didn't like it very much. We then watched an older, better representation of romeo and juilet (or so I thought) from 1968, with the dialogue also from the book but changed around a bit, and the important parts of the scene (also what I thought) were exaggerated and shown thoroughly and a lot better, like when the prince came and broke up the riot in the 2nd one, a helicopter swooped down and told them to drop their 'swords'. Those are my thoughts on the couple of different types of medias, have you seen a good representation of Romeo and Juilet? Comment ant let me know! |

My Perfect World Assignment: March. 19. 13.
My Perfect World - Assignment
In my perfect world, everything is peaceful and perfect.
Original earth, no society, nothing's been wrecked.
Leafy green home, animal invaded lands,
Left alone to roam, search, discover. There are no bans.
All seasons, all different times, we find enjoyment in all.
Connected together, supporting one another, no one can fall.
A place to forever be, with no sadness or worry.
You are free, exploring all that you can see.
Rain, snow, wind, sun, it's good for us.
Watering and nurturing without people giving a fuss.
If anything, helping the process finish with success,
so that in our world, we can finally have the best.
To think of things to do is key, because no one tells you what to do.
Run, travel, learn, play with me. Converse, build, change views.
Your able to feel and think whatever you'd like, let it wander.
Find the things around you, create, imagine, ponder.
No government or religion to rule you, you're your own God.
No guidelines, your best judgement is the one they applaud.
Living with the ones who raised you, and the ones you raise.
Or to wander alone, wild, dazed, stuck in a craze.
And in this perfect world, all our problems are gone.
No pollution, nothing to put chemicals on our lawn.
No production, we don't want more stuff, please!
More flashing lights? Colourful objects? Dings and beeps, I'm gonna seize!
No rape, murder, lying or thieves,
Just helpless critters, honest people, gathering from rich trees.
In here, all is equal and fair.
Going along life without having a care, worried about clothes, make-up and your hair.
That's not right, don't judge, find someone rare.
No want of military's and power, love conquers that.
There's forever peace and happiness with no fear of nuclear combat.
Personally, my world is great, and is always here.
Its' got a cover, society, and people that live in fear.
Well come join me, there plenty of space and welcome!
This is a place to finally be who your meant to become.
